新年月票涨 2.50$
Most Montrealers who use public transit will pay more for their commute starting in the new year.
/ _/ y* \. F4 Z) xAs of Jan. 1, the price of a standard STM monthly pass will rise from $77 to $79.50.
0 k# j! g; b: h! M: l( @5 M& wA weekly pass will go up from $23.75 to $24.50.
$ H' U, G$ x& ?$ Q4 O, O( C5 m! zA ticket to get on the 747 bus from downtown Montreal to the airport will go up a dollar — from $9 to $10.
; k4 R8 H. H; l* U$ F- p  EFor students and seniors, the price of a monthly pass will go from $45 to $47.50.
2 ~% h6 C9 H5 |2 C7 |3 \The price of a single fare remains unchanged at $3.

Vice-chair of the STM Marvin Rotrand says Montrealers are still getting a good deal.5 b$ d. v# E/ h* T) O

STM officials say the fare hikes are necessary to make up for a $16-million budget shortfall.

+ M9 i' o( `) i2 j$ nBut the opposition party Projet Montréal is worried the hikes are too significant, and will dissuade Montrealers from using public transit.% _/ Z- O6 m) J* z2 W( B/ o

* L* n6 k5 v3 v5 q' i. ?“It's a little bit too much for us. In our opinion, we should not raise STM fees higher than inflation," said Projet Montréal councillor Craig Sauvé.& B  X/ `8 O$ V3 @" x

Service cuts too?
7 C3 o! c  f9 F, |- JSTM officials say they still don’t know how much money the public transit corporation will get from the city of Montreal — the city has delayed releasing its 2014 budget until February.( p$ N2 s( u& ]  u% x" j
Rotrand says if the STM doesn't get the increase it asked for, it may have to cut services in addition to increasing its fees.4 T- Z$ r4 U: z7 b! p
